7 Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Weight

Counting calories is about as much fun as the polar bear swim in January! If you made it through the holidays without an additional 10-25 pounds, pat yourself on the back. In case you didn’t, no worries because FreshSkin has you covered. Here are seven sure-fire ways to keep your weight in check:

1. Eat before a restaurant meal. Thirty minutes before you head out, eat a 200-calorie snack that contains at least 15 grams of protein, like a protein shake or an apple with string cheese.

2. Never let yourself get hungry and stop eating before you are full. Think of a gas tank where “E” means you’re ravenous and “F” represents a full tank. Aim to stay between half and three-quarters of a tank by eating before you feel famished and stopping when you’re satisfied.

3. Aim to chew each bite of food at least 30 times. There are studies that clearly show that individuals who chew each bite well eat 12 percent less than those who chewed each bite 12 times or less.

4. Eat like a restaurant critic. Pretend you are going to write a review on the food. Take time to note the smell of the food before you “dig in,” then note the texture and flavor. Think about where the food came from and picture it in detail. Studies show that vivid memories of a meal help keep you feeling full longer.

5. Plan your meals. Planning meals will keep you on track more than impromptu meals. Make a specific grocery list, which will help keep the high-calorie options out of your cart and keep you within your grocery budget. The best time to grocery shop is on the weekend after breakfast.

6. Buy smaller blue dinner plates. Did you know that the average dinner plate in the U.S. has been enlarged by 23 percent in the past century? Proper portions on a large plate look small and make you think that you are still hungry at the end of your meal. Studies show that eating on blue plates increases your sense of satiety.

7. Share your appetizer and entree when you eat out. Just as dinner plates have gotten larger, so have restaurant portion sizes. Even if the eatery charges a “splitting fee,” just do it. Your final bill will still be much less, and you will feel better too.
